Our Mission

Bridging the Healthcare Gap in Rural Nigeria

MAHAFA is committed to enhancing healthcare access in underserved rural Nigerian communities. Our mission centers on delivering essential medicines and resources through dedicated medical missions, driven by values of compassion, equity, and sustainable impact.

Our Founder

Chief Richard Anyanwu founded Medical and Humanitarian Aid for Africa (MAHAFA) in 2001 after experiencing a personal tragedy that would shape his life’s mission. A Nigerian-born nurse living in the United States, he was devastated by the loss of his mother due to complications from poorly managed hypertension and undiagnosed diabetes. Her passing led him to reflect on a painful question: how many others in Nigeria were in the same position, silently battling preventable or treatable illnesses without access to proper diagnosis or care.

Determined to make a difference, Chief Anyanwu began with what he had. In 2002, In 2002, he and his wife, Gertrude Anyanwu, while balancing full-time nursing careers and raising six children, returned to Anyanwu’s hometown of Umueze with just two suitcases filled with blood pressure medication, antibiotics, and over-the-counter medicines. Partnering with local Nigerian doctors and nurses, he helped approximately 50 individuals receive the care they needed.

What started as a small, personal effort has grown into a far-reaching humanitarian mission. Today, MAHAFA serves more than twenty times the number of people reached in those early days. Chief Anyanwu now travels to Nigeria twice each year for three-week medical missions, supported by a volunteer team of physicians and nurses. Together, they provide care to approximately 1,000 individuals during each visit.

MAHAFA’s work is made possible through the generosity of local churches, community organizations, corporate sponsors, and private donors. With additional funding, Chief Anyanwu’s vision is to expand operations further and ship larger quantities of essential medications to Nigeria, increasing access to life-saving care for underserved communities.
